Our inalienable rights as humans extend not only to political liberty but likewise to freedom from fear and neediness. HH Dalai Lama
Our accessibility to effective relating may be inhibited by fears, especially ones not based in reality. Relationships thrive best in an atmosphere of openness to one another. Our accessibility to love may be inhibited by fear and we are so often needlessly on the defensive. What are the origins and meanings of our fears of intimacy, of abandonment, of closeness? What makes us hold ourselves back or run from feelings? In this seminar we find ways to free ourselves from the grip of fear so that it no longer stops or drives our ways of being together.
This daylong will provide techniques that show how to feel fear directly so we can then behave in ways that show we do not act on our fear nor let it interfere with our healthy goals. The result will be that we are no longer driven or stopped by fear, though we may still feel it.
In this seminar, we combine lecture and practices that are both psychological and spiritual.

The Thinning of the Self

Insight into "not-self" (anatta) is one of the core aspects of wisdom. After briefly reviewing some of the challenges of understanding anatta, we look at four practical ways to explore anatta, through focusing on 1) everyday and meditative experiences of "flow", 2) studying the "thick" or strong sense of self when it appears, 3) practicing in other ways to "thin" the self, and 4) opening to awareness without a sense of self or identification with the contents of experience.
